UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the
Responsibility to Protect
Ms. Maria Westergren is a Political Affairs Officer with the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect. She supports the mandate of the Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide and on the Responsibility to Protect which, among other tasks, are mandated to advance national, regional and international efforts to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. She also contributes to the office’s thematic work on hate speech and human rights. Ms. Westergren has a background in human rights and protection. She has worked as a Human Rights Officer with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Uganda, South Sudan, and Switzerland where she worked on advancing human rights treaties and mechanisms at the national level, as well as on human rights monitoring and fact-finding. Ms. Westergren holds a BA in Social Science specializing in Human Rights from Malmo University and an MA in International Development from Uppsala University.
